Top 5 Ways to Use Lavender Essential Oil
January 22, 2019

Ahhhh. Even saying the word “lavender” makes me want to curl up in bed and sleep or go get in a warm bubble bath and relax.
Lavender is the #1 most commonly used oil worldwide! You probably knew that already because you likely have a bottle of lavender oil in your home somewhere or a personal care product with some form of lavender in it. You likely purchased the product for the soothing and calming benefits you hoped to receive.
Well, my friend, I’m here to tell you that even though lavender is the most popular oil worldwide, not al lavender works the same or gets the same results. I can attest to this.
I was a hardcore oil skeptic for years. I didn’t believe they could really work to positively impact your health. Sure, I enjoyed a lavender bubble bath or some lavender lotion from time to time just like you probably have, but that didn’t mean I believed the lavender oil in the product was helping me get healthier!
Because the truth of the matter was, it probably wasn’t. Not all oils are the same. Just like not all food is the same. There is a very big difference in the impact a fully alive, nutrient filled apple has on your body than the impact a highly processed, completely synthetic Twinkie has on you. We understand this with our food but we don’t always apply this same wisdom to our oils or personal care products.
What’s my point?
If you’ve ever “tried” lavender in any other product other than a high-quality one like doTERRA’s and you didn’t really feel any different, I’d highly recommend giving lavender another shot. If a skeptic like me, who had “tried” other products with lavender in it but didn’t really see any difference, could tell a difference when I gave doTERRA a shot, then maybe you can too.
Here are five ways I have come to love using doTERRA Lavender essential oil in my home on a daily and weekly basis.
Top 5 Most Common Uses for Lavender Essential Oil
#1: Use Lavender Oil to Promote a Restful Night’s Sleep
This is probably the first thing you think of when you think of lavender! It is widely known for helping to aid people in a restful night’s sleep. There are so many ways you can use this at night to help you or your little ones sleep soundly. Here are a couple of options. Try a few out and then stick with the one you will do the most consistently to make using lavender a daily habit.
- Rub 1-2 drops into the bottoms of your feet
- Put a drop on your pillowcase
- Fill a 12-16 ounce spray bottle with water and 10 drops of lavender. Lightly mist your pillows or comforter before going to sleep.
- Rub a drop into your chest, under your nose or on the back of your neck.
#2: Use Lavender Oil to Soak Away Stress
doTERRA Lavender essential oil is not just great at night – it’s awesome during the day too! As a mom with “littles,” I know the last person I took care of for years was ME. Do you do that too? But here’s the thing. You probably know you are not a good mom, spouse, or friend when you are running yourself ragged and stressed out. So do a little self-care. The people you love around you will thank you.
Two of my favorite ways to soak away the stress of the day is to literally soak it away. Fill your bathtub with warm water, squirt in doTERRA’s shower gel for some bubbles (it smells good enough to eat with its grapefruit essential oil. Yum!) and add 8 drops of lavender to your tub. I also love to fill my diffuser with water then add 6-8 drops of lavender when the stress of the day has reached its peak. Filling your diffuser takes less than 60 seconds.
You are worth the minute.
So slow down and treat yourself!
#3: Use Lavender Oil to Calm Down
When you’re feeling your stress level rise and don’t have time for a bath (or maybe you hate baths, which is OK too!) what do you do?
This is what I do. It’s super easy. Grab your bottle of lavender and rub a few drops into the back of your neck, under your ears, and on your chest. Then stop and breathe in and out slowly for 30-60 seconds. Take this moment to pray, recenter, and ground yourself.
Again, you are worth the minute.
#4: Use Lavender Oil to Enhance the Appearance of Skin
So you may have known lavender is awesome for calming or for sleep, but did you know it can make your skin glow? Put a drop or two into your morning or evening skin care routine and you’ll love the results! If you’re not a huge skincare routine person, grab some doTERRA hydrating lotion or my favorite, our Anti-Aging lotion and just put a squirt of lotion on your finger, add a drop of lavender and rub it all over. I’m not awesome at remembering a full routine morning and evening but this is the easiest g0-to for me and I wake up with skin that literally is glowing!
#5: Use Lavender Oil to Remove the Sting
I LOVE this use of lavender oil. Before finding doTERRA and learning how powerful the oils are for big and little things, I was constantly trying to find natural solutions for things like cuts, burns, and bug bites. Sometimes those products worked and sometimes they left us disappointed. When you have a burn or something is stinging, you don’t want to be disappointed.
Then I discovered you could use lavender for burns and stings and I heard the Hallelujah chorus! Seriously. I don’t know why, but I’m the world’s worst when I’m cooking with hitting my hand on the oven as I’m pulling out the dish before my hand is fully out. I’ve got the scars to prove it. Or how about when you’re steaming vegetables and you take the lid off without a pot holder and the steam burns you? Ugh. Too many times.
Now I literally run to my oil box near the stove (yes, I keep lavender close by since this seems to be such a regular occurrence in my life) and rub it in. The kids will smell lavender at dinner and literally ask me, “Mom, did you burn yourself again?” 🤦🏼
So whether you burn yourself frequently like I do and need a quick solution (this stops the sting in seconds and can aid in faster healing of the skin) or your kids get a bug bite or fall and scrape their knee, lavender is a must-have in your daily medicine cabinet.
Don’t you just love lavender after hearing all the amazing things you can do with it on a daily basis? Have you already made this common oil a daily habit? If so, what do you do with it?
If lavender isn’t part of your daily routine, I hope you’ll start today! #dailyhabits
